The Navy Good Conduct Medal (NGCM) is a United States Navy award given to active-duty enlisted sailors who complete three years of honorable service:

Eligibility
To be eligible, a sailor must have no convictions by court martial, no nonjudicial punishment, and no lost time due to sickness or misconduct.

Medal
The NGCM is golden and features a sailing ship in the center with “United States Navy” engraved on three corners. The reverse side of the medal has the words “FIDELITY ZEAL OBEDIENCE” in a semicircle.

Ribbon
The NGCM ribbon is mostly light blue with a narrow red stripe in the center, wide light blue stripes on either side, and thin red and white stripes at the edge.

Awards
Additional awards are shown by bronze and silver 3/16-inch stars, with five bronze stars replaced by one silver star.

Insignia
After 12 years of service, sailors can wear a gold-colored petty officer insignia.

History
The NGCM was established in 1869. Before January 1, 1996, sailors needed to complete four years of service to receive the medal.

Next-of-kinIf a sailor is missing in action or dies from combat wounds, the medal can be awarded to their next-of-kin.
